Cyclones Top LSC In Home Thriller

Cyclones Top LSC In Home Thriller

Wednesday night brought a new opponent to the Whitney Recreation Center in the Lake Superior College Icehawks.  This is the first meeting between the two programs since being a part of the MCAC.  The Cyclones joined in 2012 and the Icehawks just this past year.  Fans were treated to a close game between closely matched teams.  The home team got all they could handle in a Wednesday night, as the #9 ranked Cyclones withstood a hot shooting night from the Icehawks and came away with a 80-77 victory to move to 4-0 on the 2019-20 season.

The Cyclones built an 11 point lead in the first half and were led by sophomore Taye Carter with a strong inside performance (4-4FG) with 8 points and 3 rebounds.  Sophomore Paul Coleman added 11 points and freshman guard Michael Asbury came off the bench to add 8 points (2-3 3FG) for the home team.  As a team the Cyclones shot 58% from the floor, but couldn't find the separation they were looking for as LSC shot 54%.

Both teams continued their shooting success in the second half with LSC hitting 10 three point baskets.  Many of the Icehawk threes came at crucial moments late in the shot clock.  The visitors took a late game 3 point lead 76-73.  The Cyclones cut the lead to one, 76-75 on a contested layup from Coleman.  The ensuing inbound was stolen by Coleman as well and he finished another play at the rim giving SCTCC the 77-76 lead.  The Cyclones would foul on the next possession which lead to LSC connecting on 1-2 free throws to tie the game up at 77 all.  After a foul call, SCTCC would have an inbound under their own basket with 4.5 seconds on the clock.  Sophomore Torez Kinchen caught the inbounds pass and finished at the rim while getting fouled.  He would finish the 3 point play at the foul line giving the Cyclones the 80-77 advantage.  LSC's last second attempt didn't drop as the buzzer sounded securing the win for the home team.  Box Score
