Bio

During the 2022-23 season, Andrew Cone completed his 12th season as the Head Coach of the St. Cloud Technical and Community College Men's Basketball program. The Cyclones have a 169-97 record in that time.

The 2022-23 season brought many new faces to the Cyclones program, including a former Cyclone player, Dillon Haider, becoming the assistant coach. Coach Haider is the 3rd former player to be on Coach Cone's staff, Thomas Thuok and Brent Petermeier being the other two. The Cyclones team finished the regular season as the #4 seed in the southern division and qualified for the Region 13 tournament for the 7th time out of 10 seasons at the NJCAA level. The first round game matched the team against Minnesota North-Rainy River who was the #1 seed in the Northern division. A close game at the half, with the Cyclones trailing 30-27, the second half would see sophomore Elijah Mead connect on 5-6 3 pointers as the team shot 54% from the floor and puller out the 67-62 victory. The second round game did not go the way the team wanted, as they dropped an 87-75 game to Minnesota North Mesabi Range.  Sophomore Ibn Khalid, Elijah Mead and Manni Ukutegbe all received southern division recognition for their outstanding seasons.

The 2021-22 season was full of obstacles as the team was only able to complete 21 total games due to restrictions from the COVID-19 pandemic.  The Cyclones had a few outstanding performers including 3 MCAC Southern Division All-Conference nominees including Sophomore London Williams and Freshmen Manni Ukutegbe and Semaj Threats. The team qualified for its 6th trip to the NJCAA Region 13 Playoff in 9 seasons as a member of the MCAC.

During the 2019-20 season, the Cyclones had a historic run starting the season 20-0.  The team won the MCAC South or the second year in a row and advanced to the NJCAA National Tournament for the first time.  The Cyclones beat Hostos (NY) in the first round and advanced to the elite 8 before falling to Eastfield College.

Coach Cone joined the Cyclones after spending six seasons as an Assistant Coach for the men's basketball team at St. Cloud State University.  While at SCSU, Cone helped lead the Huskies to back-to-back NSIC tournament championships in the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons.  He also helped lead them to 4 NCAA DII National Tournaments appearances and the 2009-10 team reached the NCAA Final Four.  During the 09-10 season the SCSU team recorded 29 wins, which is the most in the program’s long history. He has coached 5 NSIC All-Conference players, 2 All-Region players, two conference tournament MVP’s, and three All-Americans.

Prior to his appointment at SCSU, Cone served as a Graduate Assistant Coach for SDSU during the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons, helping guide the Jackrabbits to a school record 27 wins.  He was also a part of the transition at SDSU from a Division II athletic program to a Division I program.

Coach Cone spent 5 years at SDSU as a student athlete, including a redshirt year, after graduating from Minnetonka High School in the Twin Cities area.  While playing at SDSU, he was a part of 4 NCAA tournament teams and two conference championships.  Cone was elected team captain in 2001-02 and that team finished with a record of 24-6 while claiming regular season and conference tournament titles.  He started 76 of the 113 games he played for the Jackrabbits. In his career he shot 51 percent from the floor and 36 percent from beyond the three-point line.  Cone is still found in the top 10 all-time in multiple rebounding and blocked shot records at SDSU.  His teams were 84-32, for a 74% winning percentage.

Cone earned a Bachelor of Science degree from South Dakota State in 2002 and a master's degree from SDSU in 2006. Andrew is the proud father of three kids, Calen, Cadie, and Clara.
