SB: Cyclones sweep Rochester in MCAC Opener

The Cyclones opened up the 2016 conference play with a sweep at #7 Rochester.  The Cyclones took game one 4-3 and came from behind in game 2 to win 7-3 in 8 innings.

 

Game 1

The Cyclones started game one with a lead off home run off the bat of Sophomore Outfielder Paige Larsen.  RCTC came back and scored 2 in the bottom of the 2nd inning.  The Yellowjackets kept the 2-1 lead until the top of the 5th inning.  Brooke Benner tied the game with a home run of her own.  The Cyclones then took advantage of a Rochester error.  Ashleigh Troumbly reached.  She then stole second and scored on a Paige Larsen sacrifice fly.  The Cyclones tacked on another run in the seventh when Megan Johnson doubled, Troumbly singled advancing Johnson to third.  Larsen brought Johnson home with another Sacrifice Fly.  Rochester came back in the bottom of the 7th with a run of their own, but the Cyclones closed the door and took game one 4-3.  Kassidy Klaphake pitched a complete game scattering six hits. Klaphake improved to 6-4.

 

Game 2

 

Rochester looked to get revenge for their game one loss; they scored first on an unearned run in game two against Heidi Shelton.  The Cyclones wouldn't let that deficit stay for long as they scored 2 of their own in the top of the 3rd inning.  Brooke Benner hit her second home run of the day leading off the third inning.  The Cyclones scored their other run on a 2 out rally.  Brianna Kinghorn doubled.  She scored on an error which allowed Chloe Callahan reach base.

The Yellowjackets tied the game in the bottom of the 3rd. and then took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the fifth inning.  The Cyclones were down to their final out in the 7th inning; Benner singled.  Hannah VanHale pinch ran for her.  Troumbly reached on an error, VanHale reached 2nd base. Paige Larsen hit a single scoring VanHale to tie the game at 3-3.  The Yellowjackets threatened in the 7th inning loading the bases with 1 out.  The Cyclones got a double play to head to extra innings.

The bats came alive for the Cyclones in the 8th inning.  Chloe Callahan singled, a sacrifice bunt moved her up to second base.  Lexi Rose walked.  Maddie Krumm drove in Callahan on a ground rule double. Megan Johnson hit a double of her own scoring Rose and Krumm.  After Johnson advanced to third on a fly out, troumbly bunted for a single scoring Johnson.  The Cyclones took game 2 7-3.  Heidi Shelton threw all 8 innings.  She allowed 3 runs, 2 earned.  Shelton also struck out 6 while walking 3.  Heidi improved to 7-4 in the 2016 campaign.

 

The Cyclones travel to Austin for a doubleheader on April 9th.  First pitch is scheduled for 12pm.  The Cyclones return home on April 12th against Anoka Ramsey and April 13th against Ridgewater.
