Bio

Greg Thorstad has been the Head Softball Coach of the St. Cloud Technical and Community College Softball Program for the past 11 years. Under Thorstad, the Cyclones are 283-146 finishing 11-21 in his first season. During his second season the Cyclones finished 27 wins and 18 loses earning their first trip to the Region 13S Tournament. In 2013, the Cyclones equaled a program best with 27 wins and 11 losses. The Cyclones won the Conference and Region Tournaments earning a trip to the NJCAA National Tournament, all a first in program history.  The Cyclones were ranked in the top 10 in the National Polls all season long reaching as high as #6. 2014 was the Cyclones qualifying for the Region XIII tournament for the third consecutive year.  The Cyclones finished 23-14 in a weather challenged spring.  The Cyclones finished 2nd in the MCAC South.  

In 2015 and 16 the Cyclones won the MCAC South and Region 13 A Tournaments, advancing to the National Tournament for the 2nd and 3rd time in four years.  The Cyclones finished 4th in 2015 and 5th  in 2016. The Cyclones have been ranked in the top 10 in National Polls for the past 5 years, earning their highest ranking of #3 in 2016. In 2017, the Cyclones again won the MCAC South and Region 13A Tournament for the third year in a row.  The Cyclones finished with a record 41-9 finished 4th at the National Tournament.  The Cyclones were ranked as high as #3 in the nation during the 2017 campaign. 2018 had the Cyclones winning the MCAC South for the 4th consecutive year and finishing second in the Region Tournament. The Cyclones bounced back in 2019, winning their 5th consecutive MCAC South Title and 5th Region Tournament.

2020 started our Covid era.  The Cyclones started well in Florida with a 4-5 record before the season being cancelled.  2021 continued with Covid influencing the season. The Cyclones finished 19-9 earning there 7 trip to the Region finals where we finished in second place.

Thorstad has had the privilege of coaching 8 All-Americans, 4 MCAC players of the year, 23 All-Region and 23 All-State players. On his teams, he has had 16 NJCAA Academic All-Americans and 9 SCTCC Academic Athletes of the year.  In 2013 and 2015 the Cyclones were declared a NJCAA All-Academic team. In 2015 and 2016 the Cyclones were MCAC Team Academic Champions.  Greg was named MCAC Southern Division Coach of the Year in 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and Region 13A Coach of the Year in 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2019.

Previous to coaching at SCTCC, Thorstad served as a Volunteer Assistant Softball Coach and Defensive Coordinator  at Ridgewater Community College, where he is currently an Instructor. He has been a Head Baseball Coach at North Hennepin Community College and Assistant Baseball Coach at Champlin Park High School. Thorstad is a native of Danube, MN. He graduated from BDRSH High school where he was a three sport athlete. Greg earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from Hamline University in St. Paul, majoring in K-12 Physical Education.  While he was at Hamline he spent four years as a member of the baseball team and played football for two.  He received his Masters of Education Degree in Kinesiology from the University of Minnesota, majoring in Development Adaptive Physical Education. Greg and his wife Sarah, live in Delano with their two boys, Marshall and Nolan.
