
Cyclones Battle Tough Competition Midseason
At the midpoint of the season the St Cloud Technical and Community College volleyball team is matching up against tough competition. This week the Cyclones faced the 6th nationally ranked Rochester Yellowjackets and were defeated 1-3 but came back at the NDSCS tournament with 3 wins and a loss against three Division II teams.
On Wednesday the Cyclones hosted Rochester but fell 25-21, 24-26, 21-25, 20-25. Chloe Callahan, second year outside from Maple Lake, led in kills with 13, followed by McKayla Quade, first year middle from Paynesville, and Kalie Jergens, first year outside from Becker, with 10 kills each. Ally Bushendorf, first year setter from Eau Claire, and Kalli Mathiasen, first year setter from Apollo, had a combined 47 set assists. Chelsea Schroeder, first year defensive specialist from Rocori, led in digs with 21.
Friday the Cyclones traveled to North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton, ND. The first opponent was Dakota Bottineau (Division II) and the Cyclones defeat the Lady Jacks 3-0; 25-22, 25-21, 25-17. Jergens led in with 12 kills hitting a .429. Hannah VanHale, second year outside from Bertha Hewitt, led in digs with 12. Caitlin Walser-Deuel, first year middle from Big Lake, defended the net with 3 blocks.
The second match of the day was against Williston (Division II), the Cyclones fell in a five set battle; 15-25, 25-13, 13-25, 25-21, 4-15. Jergens led in kills with 11, and Mathiasen following with 9 kills. Bushendorf and Mathiasen had a combined 33 set assists. Payton Thompson, second year defensive specialist from Big Lake, and Callahan led in digs with 14 each.
On Saturday the Cyclones took on the Lake Region (Division II) coming out on top of this 5 set match; 25-22, 17-25, 21-25, 25-9, 15-12. Jergens dominated the net with 20 kills. Bushendorf and Mathiasen had a combined 41 set assists and 6 service aces. Bushendorf and Schroeder led in digs with 14 each.
In the last match of the tournament the Cyclones faced Rainy River defeating them 3-0; 25-19, 25-18, 25-19. Karlee Kern, first year outside hitter from BBE, led in digs, 14, and in kills with 9. Bushendorf had 5 service aces and Quade earned 3 blocks.
The Cyclones travel to M-Sate Fergus Falls on Wednesday, September 28th.
