Solid Start for Cyclone Volleyball

The 2018 season for the SCTCC Cyclone Volleyball team is underway! The Cyclones opened their season Wednesday, August 22, hosting NJCAA Division 2 Dakota County but fell in a close 2-3 battle (21-25, 25-27, 26-24, 25-20, 12-15). Running the offense were first year setters Paige Serbus, from Redwood Valley with 15 set assists, and Jenna Scott, from Holdingford with 22 set assists.  Kill leader Grace Mauersberger, first year outside hitter from St Michael-Albertiville, had 15 kills while first year libero from Howard Lake-Waverly, Macee Streich, led in digs with 24 and 3 service aces. Rilee Hohbein, first year middle from Holdingford, earned 4 blocks.

The St Cloud Technical and Community College hosted the Minnesota College Athletic Conference Crossover Tournament, August 24-25, where north and south teams faced each other in non-conference matches. The Cyclones went 4-0 over Itasca (3-1), Hibbing (3-1), Mesabi (3-0) and Rainy River (3-0). Overall tournament stat leaders include Mauersberger with 54 kills (4.15 kills per set), Streich with 70 digs (5.83 digs per set) and setters Serbus and Scott together earned 143 set assists, Serbus also earned 10 blocks.

The 2018 Cyclone Volleyball team consists of 11 first year student-athletes. Head coach, Heidi Smith entering her 8th season, is excited about this young team. "We have a fun, coachable group that has a lot of energy and passion for improvement. I look forward to seeing the great things they accomplish!"
